There Are Many Ways to Be Bad
It's an amazing world where a few clicks leads me from boingboing's
overly enthusiastic endorsement of what it calls 'Afrikaans rap-rave'
(check out the comments too), to this chilling, compelling,
greasy-sickening south african trash-rap (now taking the world by

    (Taking context-optional note of thought-provoking quotes) [B]logging
is now the uncoolest thing you can do on the Internet. It's even
uncooler than editing Wikipedia articles or having a Second Life
avatar. In 2006, 28% of teens were blogging. Now, just three years
later, the percentage has tumbled to 14%. Among twentysomethings, the
percentage who write blogs has fallen from 24% to 15%. Writing

    Trade Questions for Obama

    Trade Questions for Obama
From Arlen Specter: I have a two-part question, and just a brief
statement of the issue. We have lost 2.3 million jobs as a result of
the trade imbalance with China between 2001 and 2007. The remedies to
save those jobs are very ineffective -- long delays, proceedings
before the International Trade Commission, subject to being overruled
by the President. We have China violating international law with
subsidies and dumping -- really, a form of international banditry.

On Not "Antagonizing" China. Or How Many

Every once in a while, I get an email accusing me of costing Americans
their jobs and going on and on about how China is terrible and anyone
who has anything to do with China is terrible, presumably including
me. I usually respond by talking about how China is a reality and how
countries should be judged not only on where they are now, but also on
where they came from and where they are going, and on how under those
criteria, there are plenty of countries far far worse with whom the

On February 3rd, 2010, the French Cour de cassation delivered a
judgment on choice of law in personal property matters. This is only
the fourth time the Court has directly addressed the issue in the last
hundred years. In 2000, a French born painter living in New York city

    Of BRICs and PIGS
There is a significant amount of hand-wringing going on in the US that
the Euro is fraying on the edges. Some pundits have even coined a
rather derogatory acronym for Euro-countries in economic distress: the
PIGS (Portugal, Italy or Ireland, Greece, Spain). The acronym bunches

    Italy's tragic future

    Italy's tragic future
Silvio Berlusconi is a modern dictator. He controls all the most
important functions of the state and is THE key player in the private
sphere. Modern dictators are characterized by an ability to disguise
their authoritarianism through subtle strategies of marketing and
communication. Mr B is unusually suited for this role. Since 1994 he
poisoned Italian political life, after having wrecked the italian
cultural environment with its commercial televisions. Its legacy,

    No to Barroso

    No to Barroso
Does anyone out there know who Barroso is? More importantly does
anybody know what was his best achievement during his four years as
President of the European Commission, the highest institution within
the EU? Very few will be able to answer those questions. And even
those 'in the know' will have trouble chanting the praise of a
strawman. Here comes the most important question? Why do European
Member States want to re-elect him as President? Sadly, the only
possible answer is that Barroso does not do any Posted on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at 10:20 pm

    Obama's Transatlantic Speech
Berlin was like a honeymoon between America and Europe. But Obama's
honey words, were a little too sweet: That is why America cannot turn

partner than Europe. Now is the time to build new bridges across the

    This Week on the Hill

    This Week on the Hill
It is a largely quiet week on the Hill, as far as climate legislation
or hearings go. The big news this week will be roll out of the
President's budget and the expected votes to raise the nation's debt
ceiling. All of which will overshadow the one truly interesting
hearing on climate science that will be held in the House Science and
Technology Committee on Thursday. The hearing will be the first real
Congressional examination of geoengineering and whether it would work
to reverse climate trends. Tuesday, Posted on Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 12:30 pm

"de-globalization" of US mid-market companies that will extend beyond

Yes, I know I have already written a fair bit about the

Possible Rise in Yuan to Dollar Exchange Rate
The biggest gap in world trade includes the U.S. trade deficit and the
Chinese trade surplus. This gap is driven, in part, by what some claim
is China's pegging of the Yuan at an artificially low rate against the

and, in a dramatic departure from previous policy China has indicated

contends that the California death penalty statute violates the
