In a recent blog post, startup guru Guy Kawasaki explained how to use LinkedIn to find a job. For those not familiar with the site, LinkedIn is a professional networking site with over 35 million members in over 140 industries. Michelle Obama Puts the Spotlight on Work-life Balance for Lawyer-moms
On January 20, 2009, Michelle Obama will become the First Lady of the United States. Arguably, she is going to be the most prominent example of a woman dealing with the challenges that working lawyer-moms face as they work to balance their professional careers with their roles as mothers. Obama, an attorney with a successful career in private practice, city government, and corporate law, has recently spent a great deal of time working on the campaign of her husband, President-elect Barack... To Everything there is a Season
Obviously it has been a while since I have posted on this blog. Why is that? I suppose it is because I have accomplished much of what I wanted to with Law Career Blog as a solo blog. I felt I had important things to say on teaching and classroom etiquette; on law career decisions; on law firm practice; on mentoring, and more. And I have said many of them, so there you have it. I am very pleased, though, that my posts continue to draw strong traffic month after month, year after year. What I... Posted on January 31, 2009 at 04:49 pm -

The Most Important Day of Class
Last week was my first week of classes for the 2008-2009 academic year, and I was all ready to write a post called "The Most Important Day of Class." The whole premise was that the first day of class is the most important day of class for the whole term. But I didn't write that post, because I decided I was wrong. The first day of class is not the most important day of class. The second day is. Here's what I mean. The first day is important, because on that day the prof is likely to explain... The Benefits of Senior, Junior, and Adjunct Law Faculty
There was an interesting post on the Law Librarian Blog this week concerning the benefits of senior, junior, and adjunct faculty in the classroom. The post can be linked to here. This is a subject that interests me greatly, and readers will remember that I recently wrote a law review article (in the BYU Education and Law Journal) about junior faculty teaching. You can link to my full article here, and to my previous blog posts on the article here and here. The latter post includes an exchange... Posted on August 10, 2008 at 11:08 pm

Assess International Lawyers’ Emotional Intelligence Skills
As I prepare to leave for the annual International Bar Association Convention in Madrid, I have been thinking about how (most) law firms still do not fully assess lawyers before hiring them. Most law firms simply rely on candidates' law school grades, a series of short interviews and/or a clerkship, and for laterals, reputation and legal work experience. But what if, as part of the hiring decision, law firms objectively and thoroughly assessed their potential hires for their "fit" within the... Posted on October 4, 2009 at 07:26 am by janetmoore -

Social Media Bible for Lawyers
A few weeks ago I met Miranda Sevcik of Media Masters, while we were both speaking at the Texas Minority Counsel Program. Miranda, who helps lawyers with crisis communications and other media-related issues, has posted a helpful "Social Media Bible". Read it for a good summary of everything from social bookmarking to wikis. Last but not least, watch for Miranda in the news; she's working with the lawyers of Dr. Conrad Murray, the former doctor of Michael Jackson. Now that's guaranteed media... Attorneys with Portable Business: Where Do I Go?
Law firms are eager to speak with attorneys with significant portable business. The question for attorneys with the portable business is to decide what law firm is best for me? There are a number of factors to consider when you are ready to move to a new firm. 1. Law firm culture: Never underestimate the importance of the firm environment. If you are unhappy with the firm environment you will not stay long regardless of the compensation you make. There are numerous factors to consider such as... Will college students continue to remain ill-informed about law schools?
Law schools have failed their students and the public but college graduates continue to apply and attend without having the facts or information needed to make an informed decision. I request that you read this post and, if appropriate, forward it to any college students considering going to law school as well as any of those, such as pre-law advisers, who advise such students. This is a unique, almost chaotic, time in the legal profession. Large law firms are reevaluating the way they do... Posted on November 11, 2009 at 03:45 pm by Ron Fox -

Encouraging Congress to Really Examine the Dramatic Unjustified Increase in the Cost of Law School
When I read a the United States Government Accountability Office Report to Congressional Committees on HIGHER EDUCATION Issues Related to Law School Cost and Access October 2009, I was not impressed. Those drafting the report seemed to simply accept the statements of law school officials that ABA accreditation has no affect on the cost of law school but the change to a more hands-on resource-intensive approach to legal education has affected cost. The law school officials also said that... Posted on November 9, 2009 at 03:15 pm by Ron Fox -

WHY WE DO NOT NEED A PUBLIC LAW SCHOOL
A proposal for a new public law school for Massachusetts, one of only 7 states in the country not to have a public law school, has generated an enormous amount of controversy with many saying that there is a need for a school with a reasonable tuition and others saying there is at this time no need for a school that would add more lawyers to an overcrowded field. Prominent among the opponents, shocking as that may not be, are the local law schools. What is shocking is that I find myself... Posted on October 27, 2009 at 07:17 am by Ron Fox
