SOAPBOX: The “JENA 6″ Saga; Warrens Jeffs and LDS; The Futility of Silence & Disregard; URGENT APPEAL FOR CONGRESS PROBE!
The salient thing that the unfortunate turn of events which escalated into a worldwide outcry about the JENA 6 controversy in Louisiana reveals is that long ago, AN OPEN DISCUSSION of the issues could have remedied or likely prevented things from becoming out of hand. However, the majority of White residents in Jena want no media there and too many saw no reason for uproar. The same sentiment of no discussion is being conveyed by members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of LDS with... Posted on September 24, 2007 at 01:18 pm by Barbara Ann Jackson -

New Orleans Federal Agents: Who Will Be Their Next “Going Jacques Morial” Victim?
(This post was updated 9/21/2007) Analogous to a popular catchword called, "Going Postal," a certain pattern of conduct by local federal agents could become called: "Going Jacques Morial." In particular, I am tracing back to the days of raid on the Canal Street Brothel, through the days of the Stan Barre' / Morial era indictments, to the very recent charges which caused former Councilman Thomas to resign, up to the calling-out-the-guards conclusion to the battering ram raid on Jacques' condo... Upcoming Technology Topics
This is a very exciting time for the release of new technologies. I am unsure if it is the result of pent-up ideas that are finally being released after years of anticipation or simply companies seeking to one-up each other with the release of new products. Whatever the reason, there are some exciting new products that are being released in the next few months. Here a few to keep an eye out for. Layoffs May Be Result of Herd Mentality
Snowballing layoffs may be evidence more of a herd mentality than a careful evaluation of costs and benefits, according to a business school professor. The article goes on to note that, regardless of the firm's circumstances, the similar approach to cost-cutting may have nothing to do with the realities of each firm's situation. Not quite there just yet BUT Legal Research is Moving into the Google World
My Research One class has heard me, in reference to researching with Lexis or Westlaw, say many times that we don't live in a Google world just yet for Legal Research. Well, I guess we may be getting closer. Read the message below from ICC Paralegal grad Carol Nelson and try this out. It's not bad. One of My Favorite Websites: TimeandDate.com
While there are many ways to calculate deadlines, including features within Outlook(tm) and other legal-specific calendaring systems, I absolutely love, and greatly depend on TimeandDate.com. Specifically, the "Date Calculator: Add to or subtract from a date" feature found at: Date Calculator. This direct link has been at the top of my favorites list for as long as I can remember, and easily for the past five years. Of course, I also rely on the other features of this website, such as the... Posted on June 3, 2007 at 08:09 pm by Hi-Tech Texas Paralegal -

Email Etiquette - My Own Pet Peeve
When discussing technology issues, email communications generally fall into the Top 10 List of things to think about, plan for (especially in e-discovery discussion), and be mindful of. One of my own suggested tips is this: when returning from vacation, a lengthy trial or hearing, or any of the myriad of reasons that may have taken you away from your email, you undoubtedly are inundated with possibly hundreds of emails that were sent during your absence -- (1) sort your emails by subject; (2)... Mortgage Cram Downs in Bankruptcy
Do your part to help save homes across America As you are aware, homeowners across America continue to suffer from mortgages that are under water. An example of an underwater mortgage is: Home is appraised at $300,000 but $500,000 is owed on the first mortgage and $100,000 is owed on the second. If the bank repossessed the home, the most they could sell the house for would be $300,000. In fact, they would receive substantially less because they would absorb the cost of selling the property.... Posted on November 21, 2009 at 07:47 pm by admin -

Chapter 13 Concepts Exam Now Available Online
Price reduced by over 50% due to reduction in overhead expenses I am happy to report that the Chapter 13 Concepts Exam has made a giant leap into the 21st Century. It has been redesigned so that students now take the Exam online and receive their final grade immediately. In the past, a student purchased the exam for $79.99. They completed it by hand and faxed back to 713Training.Com. When we received it, we forwarded the Exam to a paralegal to grade the old-fashioned way (by hand). This process... Practical Paralegalism’s Recommended Reading This Week
One of the many reasons that I blog for paralegals is to share information relevant to our profession. There are hundreds of new articles posted every week on the Internet, but once a week I will try to break them down into a half dozen or so "don't miss" articles focusing on legal news, practice tips and technology - and a good laugh or two. Here's this week's recommended reading: "Preserve a Web Page as a PDF" from Business Hacks shows you how to convert an entire web page (not just part of... Posted on November 21, 2009 at 09:26 am -

Internet Quote: Using Technology to Avoid Your Scary Paralegal
Or "Oh, No, You Didn't Just Say That!" Does this quote from Law Practice Today's recent article, "Technology Whiz: Don't Let Technology Overwhelm You" apply to anybody you know? Neither should you use technology as a crutch for your avoidance behavior. Let's say you're scared of one of your tougher paralegals, or you don't really like your secretary, so you move her cubicle across the office and e-mail everything to her. Risking the potential for misinterpretation of assignments, pretending to... Posted on November 21, 2009 at 07:19 am -

Add Twitter to Your Paralegal Job Search Resources
A Tweet Is Worth a Thousand Words: Twitterers are not only sharing information about legal news and technology, but they're sharing job listings. To find jobs in your area, enter a query in the "search" box at Twitter.com, and see what pops up. If you're using a multi-column Twitter application like TweetDeck, you can set up a search column for any subject that interests you. If you're open to relocation, just set up columns for "paralegal" and "legal assistant", and check out the steady stream... Posted on November 21, 2009 at 05:48 am

Ethics Tip: Hey! Those are MY Billable Hours!
/**/ I receive lots of mail from paralegals. One recent message really deserves some attention. 'Anonymous' writes: Dear Vicki: I am a Paralegal Strategies subscriber, as well as a paralegal in XXX, USA. I wonder if you would offer some advice on a problem I have at the small firm where I work. My boss, the owner of firm, has developed a habit of having me draft letters or short pleadings and then bill it to the attorney's time, at the attorney's rate, which is, of course, significantly higher... The Paralegal Voice: Getting Back on the Right Track
By Vicki Voisin and Lynne DeVenny Following a recent episode of The Paralegal Voice on Legal Talk Network, Lynne DeVenny and I were very pleased to hear from one of our listeners, Andrea, who had a question about getting into the paralegal profession after graduating several years ago, and then experiencing difficulty landing a job post graduation. "I earned my A.A. Degree in Paralegal Studies in 2002 from an ABA approved school. Unfortunately, I ran into several road blocks since I had no... How Can Paralegals Set Boundaries?
Note: Today's Guest Author is Bobbie Rathjens whom I fondly refer to as 'My Web Designer' and also call 'Friend.' Bobbie listened when I told her of my dream to launch The Paralegal Mentor and understood exactly what I wanted to do. Not only did she design my Web site, but she has been an enormous support to me, answering all my 'technologically challenged' questions, teaching me when I wanted to take over some of the Web site updating myself, and quieting the panic when there are issues with...
