Carbon capture technology is far from a done deal, however. Unproven on a commercial scale, the process is extremely expensive and there are a multitude of safety concerns.

The Electric Power Research Institute has announced that they will study methods by which to add carbon capture technology to existing coal-fired power plants. The study will focus on the effectiveness of amine-based post combustion capture technology at plants of various sizes owned by five power companies in Illinois, North Dakota, Utah, Ohio and Nova Scotia. The five host companies will be joined by 15 other companies and organizations for the project.
