Today, it has been reported that guitarist Joe Satriani has sued Coldplay, alleging that portions of
Coldplay's "Viva la Vida" incorporate material from Satriani's "If I Could Fly." For those (like me) who didn't instantly know what the suit is
about, Youtube has some interesting videos comparing the relevant portions of the songs - comparisons that would probably not be widely available without sites like Youtube. Here's an

Plenty of mashups have ended up in copyright disputes and litigation over sampling rights. Here's one that runs things in the other direction. Joe Satriani sued Coldplay last week for plaigiarizing his song If I Could Fly in Coldplay's Viva La Vida. Someone
made a mashup of the two songs after the suit was filed to show the similarities, reversing the normal order of these things and making a case of life imitating litigation.

A little over four months after guitarist Joe Satriani accused the Grammy-winning band Coldplay of
copyright infringement, lawyers for the band denied any stealing of the alleged "substantial portions" of Satriani's song "If I Could Fly" to
comprise its big hit "Viva La Vida." The band's lawyers went on to say that the Satriani song "lacks originality" and therefore shouldn't
receive copyright ...

... of their song Viva La Vida. Of course, this time there's a lot more muscle behind the complaint. Guitar God Joe Satriani (presumably at the urging of his record/publishing company) has sued the members of Coldplay alleging they ripped off his riff from the song If I
Could Fly. In order to prove an allegation of copyright infringement, the plaintiff (Satriani) must show: 1) Ownership of a valid Copyright 2)
Unauthorized copying by the defendant(s) #2 can be shown by "access ...

Joe Satriani recently sued Coldplay for copying one of his songs, and a few days later a guitar
teacher, who seems to have a good handle on music theory, posts his musical analysis of whether Coldplay in fact copied. I'll bet he gets contacted by Satriani's attorney (since that's whose side he seems to favor). If he does get subpoenaed he might be forced to testify, although I'm guessing he'd be
entitled to ...

Is Coldplay original? As Paste reports, "Back in December, . . . guitarist Joe Satriani was accusing
Coldplay of plagiarizing his song, "If I Could Fly," with their undeniably catchy, monster hit, "Viva La Vida." Coldplay has now responded ... first place, it doesn't deserve shielding

... feel, with a great classical guitar segment. 8. One Robot's Dream by Joe Satriani. I have long
been a Satriani fan and the underlying hook in this song just holds my attention. One thing about Satriani that is different is that his songs, although largely instrumental, have a real vocal feel to them, with stanzas, a refrain and often a bridge.
Despite the guitar focus, Satriani doesn't just fill this song with lots of fret work, but still a good demonstration of his abilities ...

A lawsuit commenced by guitarist Joe Satriani against a wildly popular British band and its record
company has been dismissed. Satriani alleged that Coldplay stole substantial parts of his 2004 song "If I Could Fly" and improperly used them
in their hit song "Viva La Vida." From court records of the case, it seems that there was a settlement between the parties. Neither side is admitting that any agreement was reached.
