According to today's American Banker (paid subscription required), Barney Frank addressed the National Association of Federal Credit Unions and gave them the good news and the bad news. The good news was that he supported reform legislation being pushed by credit unions (the Credit Union Regulatory Improvements Act) that would raise the cap on business lending to 20% of a credit union's assets, from 12.25%, and would let any credit union, regardless of charter type, add underserved areas to its ...

The World Economic Forum recently published its 2009 Global Competitiveness Report, and I was struck by one particular statistic, as well as the conclusion drawn from it by the US Chamber of Commerce. One of the many statistical tables in the WEF report ranks the perceived strength of national protection for intellectual property. The United States ranks 19th on this chart, out of 133 countries rated. As this blog post from IP Watch reports, that ranking prompted The US Chamber of Commerce to ...

by Kevin Jon Heller I blogged last week about new JD/JD and JD/LLM programs that Melbourne has established with NYU Law School. I now want to mention another exciting new joint degree program, this time with ... students, given that Oxford generally accepts only those applicants who have already earned a JD. Again, I have to plug the students at Melbourne. I find them a joy to teach - and others obviously agree. We had tea this morning with the Dean of Oxford's Faculty of Law, and he told us that ...

On the other hand, as applied to financial institutions, I wouldn't do handsprings of joy for a couple of reasons. First, as Chris Hoofnagle, former head of the West Coast office of privacy advocacy group EPIC and currently a senior fellow to the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology at the University of California-Berkeley Boalt Hall School ...

The WSJ's Law Blog reported recently on the joy being experienced by lawyers in the firms representing plaintiffs in the Exxon Valdez case, their spirits dampened only mildly by the Ninth Circuit's recent reduction in the punitive award from $4.5 billion to $2.5 billion. Those firms include traditional plaintiffs' firms such as Milberg Weiss, but also firms normally seen representing defendants, such as Davis Wright Tremaine and Faegre & Benson. How do Faegre & Benson lawyers feel about ...

... . That's how I learned Internet marketing 11 years ago, by attending Web advertising/marketing conference led by professionals from the marketing and tech sector. Copying what other lawyers are doing is a dead end. Begin to market like the rest of the business world and you'll run laps around your competitors. No great joy in sitting on a plane for 6 hours, but I may try and get back to New York City for the program. Let me know if you want to get together the end of next month in New York.

... engineering laws born of good intentions, it has also been used and abused in ways that make a cynical bank lawyer even more cynical, if that's possible. On the other hand Martha, being the long-time consumer advocate that she is, is likely swooning with joy at the prospect of Rep. Johnson's bill not only casting a wider net to reel in more fish, but, as Martha puts it, "repealing a lot of the Bush-era regulations that weakened Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) enforcement for lenders with less ...

The diversity of experiences and interactions with this breed demonstrates the wide variety of animal personalities, while suggesting that the aggressive reputation of pitbulls ...

The treacherous letterbox appears to have been what Americans would call a "mail slot" with a swinging door. Joy Goodman claims that the tip of her right index finger was actually severed by the letterbox door, and that consequently she can no longer work as a cake decorator. The article doesn't note it, but I'm convinced that he punctuated his remarks about these joyful prospects with just the littlest line of drool running down his chin. It can have contraband in it. It can be stolen. It can be taken for joy rides. But you don't seem to make any of those arguments. You just want to keep coming back to officer safety and on that point I think your case is very weak." Justice Scalia similarly asked both sides whether there was any historical - ...

The other comic moment took place on "The View," when Joy Behar announced that she had heard Blago does a great impersonation of Richard Nixon, and demanded that he do it on the show. Finally, I want to note a pithy comment made at the end of this blog post written by Peter Jackson, the chief scientist and vp at Thompson Reuters publishing. In some ways the post is a little mundane, mostly focused on the joys of e-books. But the last line caught my eye and suggested a context for these other items I have discussed. "In the future," Jackson writes, "the book is no longer a product; it's a service." I am not sure that Jackson would ...

The game, which is described as "hilarious" and "amusing" but sounds mostly horrible, involves pressing on Fertile Myrtle's belly to shoot "another adorable bundle of joy" into the arms of "Wacky Grandma." Douglas also wrote much more, including several episodes of the classic show Doctor Who, two books in a series about the holistic detective Dirk Gently, the quasi-dictionary The Meaning of Liff, the computer game Bureaucracy, and Starship Titanic. Bad times for banks and most businesses. Good times for many lawyers. Brings a little tear of joy to the corner of your eye, doesn't it?
