On April 16, the Supreme Court asked the Solicitor General to brief issues in Quanta Computer Inc. v. LG Electronics Inc., 06-937. LG Electronics complains that it had licensed its patents to Intel in 2000 on the condition that the chips not be combined with non-Intel components in a way that infringed the patents. The Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC) ruled in LG's favor in July 2006.

LG Electronics, no stranger to patent cases (at the Supreme Court and elsewhere) is involved in a case with Whirlpool over refrigerators. Reuters stated: Whirlpool said on Wednesday [23 Jan 2008] it filed the patent infringement action with the International Trade Commission (ITC), charging several LG refrigerator models infringe five Whirlpool patents. It asked for an ITC order to stop LG from selling and importing infringing products into the United States.

When I posted about the Netflix deal with TiVo, I thought that was a loser but this one makes sense. Here, LG allows people who buy their TVs to connect to Netflix without an external box. TiVo like Netflix is a subscription service with a very similar business model but LG is a manufacturer working with a software service provider and that has much more potential. South Korea's LG Electronics Inc. has signed a patent cross-licensing agreement with Microsoft Corp. covering a variety of hardware and software products, the companies said.
