06/02/09 Providence Journal (source: Gay Marriage Watch) Despite hours of hearings at the State House this year - and support for same-sex marriage in other Northeast state - this bill is the only one of the dueling defense-of-marriage, same-sex marriage, divorce and equal-rights bills introduced in Rhode Island this year that has managed to make it out of a legislative committee.

A Rhode Island Senator will propose making it a felony to drive on a license which has been suspended due to a DUI conviction. He will also propose requiring DUI offenders to turn in their license plates for the duration of their suspension.

The Rhode Island House of Representatives passed a bill yesterday that would require developers to seek approval from the General Assembly and affected municipalities for emergency response plans submitted for LNG projects in the state. The Herald News (Fall River, Mass.) reports that a similar measure was proposed last year and was passed by the House before being rejected by the Rhode Island Senate.

Former State prosecutor, and fellow graduate of my alma mater BC Law, Peter Neronha was today sworn in as the US Attorney for Rhode Island. The Senate confirmed Neronha's confirmation on Tuesday with the support of both RI Senators, Reed and Whitehouse. Neronha became a federal prosecutor in 2002 after spending several years as a Rhode Island State prosecutor. Best of luck.

FERC released its response to several Rhode Island state senators who raised questions regarding the Weaver's Cove LNG import project. In a general legislative wrap-up, the Providence Journal reports that the Rhode Island state House passed House Bill No. 6482, proposed by Rep. Raymond Gallison (D-Bristol), which would require any emergency response plan for the transport of LNG through Narragansett Bay or Mount Hope Bay to receive approval from the General Assembly and the coastal communities along the tanker route prior to implementation. The bill has been moved to the state Senate for consideration.

AP reports that the Rhode Island Supreme Court agreed today to reconsider an earlier decision by the state's Board of Elections that found North Carolina Senator John Edwards 27 signatures short of the 1000 required for ballot certification in that state.
