This time of year always sees retrospective articles about the year in crime. My local evening paper, the Albuquerque Tribune, today published a package of articles about murder in Albuquerque and its suburbs. The articles show, among other things, that we had one homicide in June, the least of any month, and 10 in July, the most of any month. There's no reason for the dramatic difference between the two hottest months of the year. It just happened - a reminder that short-term changes in crime ...

Priceline is making an intriguing offer for travelers this summer - guaranteed sunshine! "If your vacation is rained out, it's free!" Of course, the devil is in the details: *MOUSE PRINT: 1. You must buy a vacation (hotel, airfare), not just airfare. 2. Sunshine is not guaranteed. If it is cloudy every day, no refund is due. 3. The big string is the amount of rain necessary to trigger a full refund: it must rain at least 1/2 inch for at least half the days of your trip. For a five day trip, it ...

As Tropical Storm Fay continues to pound Florida this week, I was recently reminded that it's been 23 years since Connecticut suffered a direct hit from a Hurricane -- the infamous Hurricane Gloria. No worries then for Connecticut, right? Wrong. Connecticut has been hit by several tropical storms since then -- just like Fay -- and Hurricane Bob passed close enough over 15 years ago to cause significant damage in the state. And the Great Hurricane of 1938 may be one for the history books, but it ...

A 20+ foot storm surge will top the Galvastan Island sea wall and the damage will be high. Ike will strengthen into a dangerous Category 3 hurricane over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico today. Maximum sustained winds will be at least 111 mph, with higher gusts, around the wall of Ike's eye at the time of landfall. The storm surge has already reached the Texas coast. A massive surge as high as 20 feet above normal tides will slam the coast with locally higher amounts possible in some of ...

Remember last year's mess on the roads? If you recall, lots of Hartford-area employers sent their employees home early during a snow storm -- creating gridlock and lots and lots of headaches. As a result, Gov. Rell set up a task force to coordinate with the largest area employees on their dismissal patterns. Tomorrow will be the first big test of that, with the forecast calling for heavy snow during the afternoon and evening commute. But suppose you're not one of those employers affected by the ...

No joke - A Christmas present that actually works. I visited my sister's house recently noticed that they are still regularly using the gift that I gave to them last Christmas! It is a simple device that receives a radio-signal from ACCUWeather and provides a 5-day forecast. A partner at MBHB initially recommended it to me. $85 from Brookstone $13 from Radio-Shack Those who know me will realize that I purchased the RadioShack version. Unfortunately, it appears to be on back-order. What to get ...

MIPTC received several, long-winded and sometimes boringly similar Christmas letters (you know who you are) this year. I dutifully put each one in the round file. Only a search warrant will get me to give them up again. But in the spirit of the holiday, here's MIPTC's take on this justifiably maligned and misguided holiday tradition (looking from a different perspective on family and friends): It's been a busy, but perhaps not too surprising a year for everyone here at the blog. With the top ...
