In 1985, three women accused Walter Smith of rape. He was convicted for two of the three rapes and sentenced to 78 to 190 years in prison for the crime, but post-conviction DNA testing eventually exonerated Smith. He spent ten years in prison and he earned an associate's degree in business while he was there. For more information on Walter Smith's exoneration, visit the Innocence Project online.

... abuse in the juvenile justice system in Pennsylvania. This sort of thing is, one hopes anyway, rare these days, but it didn't use to be. As I've no doubt mentioned on this blog before, my father, the late Walter E. Smith, Jr. spent a good part of his career campaigning for the reform of the juvenile justice system in Idaho which believe me, going into the 1960's was a nightmare out some bad movie. His campaign was largely successful. Idaho ...

... claiming that Clinton's federal pardon eliminated his local disbarment. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit did not agree, and the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear his appeal. To former D.C. delegate Walter Fauntroy, Borders' case had a spiritual quality to it. "Being pardoned by the president is like being pardoned by Jesus," Fauntroy sermonized. Thankfully, the Supremes evidently disagreed with this "theology."] If the House is in the mood to investigate, there's lots to follow up ...

... unopposed, or opposed too late to help. If CIGNA did breach its contract in this case, it is very much to be blamed. It would not only discredit itself, but the whole system of private medical insurance, at a very bad time to do so. But the idea that the public sector would have done a better job for Natalie is more than unproven; it's utterly implausible. If the federal government can't even take care of veterans at Walter Reed, I don't see why they are going to better with civilians in LA.
