I have what the Religious Right calls a “traditional family.” My wife and I have been married for nearly 20 years and have two children. The four of us live (along with two cats) in a house in the suburbs. From a demographic point of view, we couldn’t be less interesting. But I’m keenly aware that not all families are […] Read More [read post]

Facebook has become a greater forum for opinions on marriage, divorce, politics, religion and many other subjects of debate. Some time back a Boston radio station asked that I be interviewed about an article written by a third-party who made the claim that Facebook has substantially contributed to the increased breakdown of marriages. I declined the interview. However, as a lawyer focusing my law practice exclusively in the area of divorce and family law I found it interesting that the media has… [read post]

Over the weekend, Washington was slammed by a treacherous snowstorm that dumped two feet of snow in some areas. Since I grew up in Ohio and went to college in Syracuse, N.Y., the snow didn’t really bother me much. But for others here, the blizzard was a difficult experience. It apparently was very rough for Bishop Harry [...] [read post]

New York has passed a bill legalizing same sex marriage, and governor Cuomo is expected to sign it. Here is a nice, in-depth story from the NY Times on the behind the scenes stories that went into making the bill a reality. The bill passed in a state where Republicans actually control the legislature by a slim margin. But the Times article makes it plain that the decisions turned on personal relationships that influenced the various legislators -- gay children, relatives, friends, friends of… [read post]

A gay couple that tied the knot in New York last year received a divorce by a private judge in Columbus, Ohio, last week the Columbus Dispatch reported. Judge Donald Cox granted Jonathan Baize, 31, and Stephen Wissman, 31, a divorce after a short hearing. The two men married in New York last September but later decided to end their relationship. In 2008 New York Gov. David Paterson made marriages from other jurisdictions valid about a year and a half before Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed same-sex marriage… [read post]

As I write this, gay and lesbian couples can legally marry in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Iowa and the District of Columbia. California allowed same-sex marriage just long enough for gay couples to rejoice that they finally had the right to marry … then Proposition 8 came along and took away that right. California is now in the unique position of having three distinct segments of people: straight folks who have always had the right to marry, lesbian and gay citizens… [read post]
