A confirmed bachelor type friend of mine asked me recently why people have children. If you penciled it out, it just didn’t make sense, he was explaining.

Numerous news channels have reported on the horrible mass murder that took place this morning at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, where a gunman (whom I will not give the dignity of a name too for that sick recognition could only be his goal of all this) entered the school with three weapons including an assault rifle and opened fire on teachers, administrators and elementary school children. Twenty-six people including eighteen children have been reported dead.

Like everybody else. I'm having difficulty understanding the massacre of babies in a Connecticut classroom. How could this have happened?
I saw on the news coverage that more than 40 classroom shootings have happened since Columbine! Is this acceptable? Can't we make our schoolhouses safe? Something must be done; enough is enough!

Morgan Stanley, where three employees lost family members in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, has donated $150,000 to charities honoring the victims. In addition, about 1,400 employees have made pledges, contributing just over $1 million in total. [read post]

Meriden, Conn. –The first lawsuit to result from the Connecticut school shooting was filed on behalf of a 6-year-old girl who survived. The suit claims that the student has sustained emotional and psychological trauma and injury as a result of hearing the gunman, Adam Lanza, yelling and shooting over the school intercom. The town of Newton, Connecticut, along with the rest of the United States, was rocked early Friday morning when a gunman clad in black walked into a classroom and opened fire.
20 children and 6 adults were killed when Adam Lanza, armed with a .223 caliber rifle, gunned down his mother in her classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Technically, workplace violence is any act where an employee is abused, threatened, intimidated, or assaulted in the workplace. It can include threats, harassment, and verbal abuse, as well as physical attacks by someone with an assault rifle.

Normally, this blog writes itself. This morning, however, the words have not come easy. Does writing about FMLA leave relating to the Newtown tragedy really matter?
Indeed, I’ve rewritten this post about 5 different times. What can we say that will comfort those? What can we do to help those? Are we helpless to respond?

I've been so deeply saddened with the Connecticut elementary school shooting. I like to think that we are a (sufficiently) well-functioning society based on sound law and order. But tragedies such as this show the weakness in our perceived ability to prevent illegal activity or to provide justice for victims. The little gift card collection project that my wife and I did for 48 hours went very well and the cards were delivered earlier today. I’ll have a separate post about our efforts at some point soon. In the meantime, others have asked what else they can do to help Sandy Hook elementary school, particularly now that we are not taking any more collections. Driving into Newtown yesterday, I was struck by one overpowering thing: Reminders of the tragedy were everywhere. It was unrelenting.
Makeshift signs, near the I-84 exit, and on the roadside, say things like “Pray for Newtown”.

Yesterday, I briefly mentioned a small personal collection project my wife and I were doing for 48 hours among our friends to get gift cards we could distribute to the Newtown Sandy Hook Elementary School teachers to help them restock their classrooms with supplies.

The city of St. Paul has taken a step towards cracking down on high-capacity magazines and military-style assault weapons in the wake of the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut that claimed the lives of 26 children and adults.
The city amended a legislative request to state lawmakers to place restrictions on the availability of the high-powered assault rifles, including the AR-15 semiautomatic rifle that was used in the Sandy Hook school shooting.
