A confirmed bachelor type friend of mine asked me recently why people have children.  If you penciled it out, it just didn’t make sense, he was explaining. I knew he was right… there’s nothing that makes sense about having kids, especially these days.  They’re expensive as can be.  They restrict your lifestyle for decades.  They’re not always perfect… although mine happens to be.  And you constantly worry for their safety today and… [read post]

Numerous news channels have reported on the horrible mass murder that took place this morning at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, where a gunman (whom I will not give the dignity of a name too for that sick recognition could only be his goal of all this) entered the school with three weapons including an assault rifle and opened fire on teachers, administrators and elementary school children.  Twenty-six people including eighteen children have been reported dead. Whatever… [read post]

A true #hero. News worth sharing... #VictoriaSoto (Photo credit: ArtJonak) Like everybody else. I'm having difficulty understanding the massacre of babies in a Connecticut classroom. How could this have happened? I saw on the news coverage that more than 40 classroom shootings have happened since Columbine!  Is this acceptable?  Can't we make our schoolhouses safe? Something must be done; enough is enough! One aspect of the story bears repeating.  The… [read post]

The controversial release on Wednesday of 911 audio recordings from Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. shows just how unsettled the debate is in America about the public's right to hear the cries of help of those in emergencies. [read post]

Morgan Stanley, where three employees lost family members in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, has donated $150,000 to charities honoring the victims. In addition, about 1,400 employees have made pledges, contributing just over $1 million in total. [read post]

Violence at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., has reignited ongoing conversations about mental health, gun control and workplace violence. On Nov. 6, 2012, a deadly shooting in Fresno, Cali, claimed the lives of three people when an employee opened fire on his co-workers before taking his own life. Two weeks prior, Foxnews.com reported that a gunman in Minneapolis opened fire inside of a sign-making business, killing five people, including himself. Such instances suggest that an… [read post]

Saturday will be the one year anniversary of the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.  I am often confused as to how this country can tolerate the kinds of violence and loss of life that makes the United States unique among all other advanced, industrialized countries.  This goes beyond tragedies like Newtown to everyday occurrences like for-profit healthcare and  mass incarceration.  Newtown is just the culmination of everything that, at times, makes living in this country a… [read post]

Meriden, Conn. –The first lawsuit to result from the Connecticut school shooting was filed on behalf of a 6-year-old girl who survived.  The suit claims that the student has sustained emotional and psychological trauma and injury as a result of hearing the gunman, Adam Lanza, yelling and shooting over the school intercom.  The suit also contends that the State Board of Education, the Department of Education and the Education Commissioner failed to take appropriate steps to protect… [read post]

The town of Newton, Connecticut, along with the rest of the United States, was rocked early Friday morning when a gunman clad in black walked into a classroom and opened fire. 20 children and 6 adults were killed when Adam Lanza, armed with a .223 caliber rifle, gunned down his mother in her classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Lanza, 20, was also found dead inside the school.  His motive is unknown at this time.   Ryan Lanza, the gunman’s brother, is being held for police… [read post]

In light of the horrific elementary school shootings in Newtown, Connecticut last week it may be time to re-evaluate workplace violence, which seems to be increasing at an alarming rate. Technically, workplace violence is any act where an employee is abused, threatened, intimidated, or assaulted in the workplace. It can include threats, harassment, and verbal abuse, as well as physical attacks by someone with an assault rifle.  Two million American workers are victims of workplace violence… [read post]

Normally, this blog writes itself. This morning, however, the words have not come easy.  Does writing about FMLA leave relating to the Newtown tragedy really matter? Indeed, I’ve rewritten this post about 5 different times.  What can we say that will comfort those? What can we do to help those? Are we helpless to respond? Yesterday, I heard from a friend whose kids go to Sandy Hook Elementary that the teachers will need the traditional beginning of the year school… [read post]

The little gift card collection project that my wife and I did for 48 hours went very well and the cards were delivered earlier today. I’ll have a separate post about our efforts at some point soon.  In the meantime, others have asked what else they can do to help  Sandy Hook elementary school, particularly now that we are not taking any more collections.  I’ve received the following list from the school itself.  These are simple, concrete ways to make a… [read post]

I've been so deeply saddened with the Connecticut elementary school shooting.  I like to think that we are a (sufficiently) well-functioning society based on sound law and order.  But tragedies such as this show the weakness in our perceived ability to prevent illegal activity or to provide justice for victims.  This depraved gunman took his own life, evading the legal process of conviction and punishment.  Not only did he deprive the parents this justice, of permitting the… [read post]

In light of the recent tragedyin Newtown, Connecticut, the Stowers Law Firm would like to first take a moment to mourn the loss of the victimsand honor those who were truly heroicduring the horrific shooting that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School.  Ever since the tragic events in Connecticut occurred, there has been a lot of debate and discussion regarding the future of gun legislation in the U.S. and what steps should be taken to prevent tragic events like this from happening… [read post]
