The Maine House enacted a bill allowing gay marriages in Maine by a vote of 89-57 today. This follows a vote in favor of the bill last week by the Maine Senate. Now the bill is sent to Governor John Baldacci for his signature. The Governor has not indicated for certain what he'll do. If he signs it, Maine will be the 5th state in the country to allow gay marriages. Governor, the ball is in your court. [read post]

Governor Baldacci surprised lots of folks by signing into law the right of gays to marry in Maine. By doing so, Maine becomes the 5th state in the U.S. to legalize same sex marriage. Opponents vow to have a petition to force a state-wide referendum on the issue. They hope to overturn the Governor's decision and the vote of the Maine House and Senate. It appears that the U.S. Supreme Court sides with the obnoxious and offensive funeral protesters that often wave signs at military deaths proclaiming things like "Thank God for Dead Soldiers" , "God Hates Fags" and other derisive things. The Justices ruled that although the speech is offensive, it's protected under the First Amendment. As reported in today’s Press Herald, the Portland School Committee had its first public hearing on the proposed $89 million budget shortfall and needed cuts of 80 positions. And, no surprise, no one wants their budget cut.
Employees said they want to remain employed; people indicated that programs — like special education, sports, music — should be retained.
Hmmm.

Yesterday, Economic Development Commissioner Phil Congdon resigned for making disparaging comments about affirmative action, the parenting skills of people in Northern Maine and saying that those same people need to "get off the reservation." Now that President Obama has announced the killing of Osama bin Laden, you'd think that all U.S. citizens would give him a pat on the back. But no - the right-wing never admits that President Obama can do anything right. The Press Herald reports that at a recent news conference at the Blaine House, Gov. LePage whined again about how the Legislature isn't doing enough, and how the press just cares about sound bites instead of focusing on the facts. LePage has said in the past that buying a daily paper in Maine is "like paying someone to lie to you." In the Portland Press Herald today and in various outlets on-line, I've read the AP article stating that the wealthy are paying far less in taxes than they did in years past. There are so many tax breaks that the rich often pay little or no taxes at all. In fact, nearly half of all households in the US pay nothing. The Portland Press Herald reports that Maine is getting a $30,000 grant to help install 100 tsunami signs. Thank God because Maine was hit with a tsunami just last … um … er … oh, that's right: never. Now these aren't warning devices or anything that could possibly be even remotely useful. No, these are just signs that identify evacuation routes should a tsunami actually strike. Now let's see how that would work. Maine Democrats took a whoopin at the last election: a new Republican Governor and GOP increases nearly everywhere. Gov.
