A rule that would have banned having sex with clients in Texas was rejected by 72 percent of lawyers voting. I wonder how clients would have voted. Only in Texas. Read about it here. [read post]

The Maine House enacted a bill allowing gay marriages in Maine by a vote of 89-57 today. This follows a vote in favor of the bill last week by the Maine Senate. Now the bill is sent to Governor John Baldacci for his signature. The Governor has not indicated for certain what he'll do. If he signs it, Maine will be the 5th state in the country to allow gay marriages. Governor, the ball is in your court. [read post]

Governor Baldacci surprised lots of folks by signing into law the right of gays to marry in Maine. By doing so, Maine becomes the 5th state in the U.S. to legalize same sex marriage. Opponents vow to have a petition to force a state-wide referendum on the issue. They hope to overturn the Governor's decision and the vote of the Maine House and Senate. According to the Press Herald, if opponents get the necessary signatures (about 55,000) to hold a referendum in November, the law won't take effect… [read post]

It appears that the U.S. Supreme Court sides with the obnoxious and offensive funeral protesters that often wave signs at military deaths proclaiming things like "Thank God for Dead Soldiers" , "God Hates Fags" and other derisive things. The Justices ruled that although the speech is offensive, it's protected under the First Amendment. In a warped sense of justice, the protesters believe that military deaths are God's revenge for U.S. tolerance of homosexuality. As noted in the Washington Post, the… [read post]

As reported in today’s Press Herald, the Portland School Committee had its first public hearing on the proposed $89 million budget shortfall and needed cuts of 80 positions. And, no surprise, no one wants their budget cut. Employees said they want to remain employed; people indicated that programs — like special education, sports, music — should be retained. Hmmm. There nearly a $90 million shortfall and no one wants to cut jobs or programs (at least not the programs they’re in favor of). … [read post]

Yesterday, Economic Development Commissioner Phil Congdon resigned for making disparaging comments about affirmative action, the parenting skills of people in Northern Maine and saying that those same people need to "get off the reservation." Also yesterday, Darryl Brown, the Department of Enviromental Protection Commission, resigned rather that disclose his business records, after the A.G.'s office issued an opinion that he was "unqualified" to serve in his position under Maine law. Brown's… [read post]

Now that President Obama has announced the killing of Osama bin Laden, you'd think that all U.S. citizens would give him a pat on the back. But no - the right-wing never admits that President Obama can do anything right. Instead of congratulating him on a gutsy call, conservative talk show host Laura Ingraham accused Obama of turning his remarks on bil Laden "into a campaign speech. He should have thanked GWB, not reminded us OBL escaped." It's clear that politics trumps everything in today's… [read post]

The Press Herald reports that at a recent news conference at the Blaine House, Gov. LePage whined again about how the Legislature isn't doing enough, and how the press just cares about sound bites instead of focusing on the facts. LePage has said in the past that buying a daily paper in Maine is "like paying someone to lie to you." At least he acknowledges that by telling President Obama to "go to hell", by calling protesters "idiots", and by saying that the only side effect he knows about to a… [read post]

In the Portland Press Herald today and in various outlets on-line, I've read the AP article stating that the wealthy are paying far less in taxes than they did in years past. There are so many tax breaks that the rich often pay little or no taxes at all. In fact, nearly half of all households in the US pay nothing. So why is it that the Republican Party is proposing to cut Medicare, Medicaid, and other services for the poor while it continues to support tax cuts for the wealthy? The Republican… [read post]

The Portland Press Herald reports that Maine is getting a $30,000 grant to help install 100 tsunami signs. Thank God because Maine was hit with a tsunami just last … um … er … oh, that's right: never. Now these aren't warning devices or anything that could possibly be even remotely useful. No, these are just signs that identify evacuation routes should a tsunami actually strike. Now let's see how that would work. You're relaxing in the sun while stretched out on a blanket at Old Orchard Beach.… [read post]

Maine Democrats took a whoopin at the last election: a new Republican Governor and GOP increases nearly everywhere. Gov. LePage is a conservative businessman and is doing the exact thing he indicated he would during his campaign: reducing red tape in state government, relaxing enviromental standards to make businesses more profitable and attract new business, and emphasizing that "profit" is not a dirty word. Part of this process in changing the way the state of Maine does business, is having his… [read post]

Will the Bush-era tax laws expire after December 31, 2012? To expire or not to expire, that is the question. When it comes to the “default” 2013 estate tax, some 12.5% of U.S. households may come under the estate tax axe, according to new analysis by LIMRA. These numbers were picked up and reported by LifeHealthPRO and reported in its article titled, “LIMRA: More than 1 in 8 U.S. households may owe estate tax in 2013.” This change in the estate tax exemption limit scoops up a huge new… [read post]
