I have used this blog to explain the various steps in the legal process. Today, I will write about the Request for Judicial Intervention (RJI). As the name suggests, an attorney files an RJI to ask the court to intervene in a court action. The RJI can be an important tool in both prosecuting a case and moving it forward. In January 2011, a Brooklyn man out for a walk on the Brooklyn Promenade slipped and fell on an uncleared patch of ice. The incident tore the ligaments in his left elbow and required surgery and months of intensive physical therapy to repair the damage. The man asked me to represent him. On a rainy August evening, a man rode his bicycle along W. 117th Street in Manhattan. As he approached the intersection with Amsterdam Avenue, he began to make a left turn. He never finished that turn as a rental truck struck him, knocked him off his bicycle and sent him to the hospital. The man initially thought he had suffered some bad bruising and that he would recover quickly. Unfortunately, he suffered a fractured ankle and significant bruising. [read post]
