I was reading the other day on Techdirt, about a war that’s a-brewing in the open source community. In one corner we have the Wikimedia Foundation; in the other, Internet Brands – the company that owns and operates Wikitravel.com. A saga involving volunteer editors, a for-profit wiki site and bombastic court filings, the Wikitravel v. Wikimedia Foundation lawsuit, believe it or not, is so intriguing it could serve as the topic for a made for TV movie. The Wikitravel.com Tale Back in… [read post]

There was an interesting post from Carolyn Elefant of My Shingle discussing an ABA ethics opinion on lawyers use of websites. The opinion is being released tomorrow. However, the ABA is limiting access to the opinion by asserting copyright restrictions. Carolyn reprinted a letter she sent to the listserve on her blog My Shingle: Thank you for sharing with the group ABA Opinion 10-457 (August 5, 2010) on lawyers’ use of websites. While I’m glad that the opinion will be… [read post]

Guest post by Christine Duhaime (Duhaime Law) Defamation by Tweet? In one of BC’s first ever Twitter defamation actions, RCMP officer James Brown, has filed a civil claim against a Vancouver lawyer and three other defendants over, among other things, sexual, or sexually-related content disseminated over the Internet, including on Twitter. And I think he’s likely to win his case if he can prove that the statements were published and the defendants were the authors of those statements. Alleged… [read post]

One of the best things about the Firefox web browser are the add-ons and extensions developers have created to make Firefox a much more powerful tool than simply a browser. One of our favorites here at AttorneySync is Rank Checker from SEObook. (FYI you should subscribe to this blog as well if you have any interest in learning more about search engine optimization.) More states are considering forcing e-commerce sites to collect sales tax.  Since we last addressed the issue, Maryland legislators have taken testimony relevant to a bill that would require websites who employ local marketing affiliates to collect sales tax in the state.  Last month, Colorado passed a law that requires e-commerce sites to either collect sales tax or share information with the state about purchases made by residents. The Federal Bureau of Investigation reports that… [read post]

I’ve seen one too many law firm websites that basically are passing along the same type of message you see above. It’s lazy and ineffective at best and at worst the marketing actually will have a negative effect, driving business away instead of bringing it in. It’s the type of marketing where a law firm website is poorly designed and unprofessional looking. I know you’ve seen these sites before. They look amateurish and 15 years old. There is just no excuse for this when you could… [read post]

As we’ve discussed many times, the likelihood that a lawyer directory will produce results for your law firm depends largely upon its search engine visibility. Likewise, when it comes to geographic and practice-specific searches, the success of any particular directory depends greatly on the the its visibility for those types of key phrases. A directory’s performance in one location for a particular practice area, may be completely different for a different location and practice area… [read post]

There has been an abundance of articles written about Google Instant since its launch. One of the more interesting takes I have come across so far was from a post on Search Engine Land called “How Google Saved $100 Million by Launching Google Instant”. Matt Van Wagner, the post’s author tells us: Personally, I kind of like Google Instant and I think it represents a natural evolution in the way search works, but for today, I’d like to talk mostly about Google Instant for… [read post]

In a speech today before the Internet Governance Forum entitled “Taking Care of the Internet,” Neelie Kroes, Vice President of the European Commission, responsible for the Digital Agenda for Europe, argued for “a globally coherent approach” to preserve “the global character of the Internet, and keep it from fragmenting.” That sounds good in theory but, as always, the devil is in the details. No one wants to see a highly balkanized Internet with each country and continent becoming a… [read post]

Mom and pop stores and companies that are primarily brick and mortar may soon be getting a more equal playing field with their online competitors due to a potential change in public policy and the law. This change is that online companies may soon be required to collect state sales tax for purchases made on the Internet even if the company doesn't have a place of business in the state where the consumer is located. Some web based companies have relied on this tax advantage to grow their business. … [read post]
