Improvisation theories, drawn mostly from jazz, have increasingly been applied to entrepreneurship, new product development, and other fields, but rarely, if ever, to journalism. Yet journalism is an industry built on improvisation, from the actions of reporters out in the field, to the deadline work of editors and page designers. More than that, it is [...] [read post]

Kmart is another company that has been limping along for some time now. However, a recent advertising campaign has gone viral, sparking conversation around the company by people of all ages. Truth be told, I first heard of their newest commercials from my pre-teen daughter and her friends, probably because the play on words made them feel like they were saying things they shouldn't and was hilarious to them. The first commercial, entitled "Ship My Pants" highlights Kmart's newer service of being… [read post]

By IT-Lex Intern Christopher Britt (LinkedIn) Unless you have been living under a rock for the past year, it is likely that you have heard of Trayvon Martin and the man who shot and killed him, George Zimmerman.  The trial is getting underway, with the second day of jury selection taking place as we speak, just one county north of IT-Lex HQ. Both men seem to have a sordid past (Martin’s past; Zimmerman’s past), and now a Judge must decide what is relevant about Martin’s… [read post]

Not for slapping his attorney's butt, after slapping it, in sort of an NFL-style congratulatory buttslap for having just gotten him a deal that would have resulted in no jail time. Doing this in view of the judge and spectators turns out to have been a bad idea. TMZ was there to get the video: Unfortunately your browser does not support IFrames.  "The whole courtroom was laughing," according to the judge, who unfortunately for Johnson was the one person in the courtroom who… [read post]

I love video. I've been working with video for over thirty years and for over half of that time I've been involved in putting video on the internet. However I've usually used video to accomplish a specific goal. The goal may be trivial but I've always had a hard time making video unless it has a purpose. Over the next few blogs we are going to look at some specific goals and how video may help achieve those goals. If generating traffic to your web site or converting customers is not as important as… [read post]

Just as more divorcing spouses in Tampa are seeking an alternative to the usual courtroom battles, the use of the collaborative family law process is growing around the country.  Collaborative Practice California has produced a video which follows an actual couple going through a collaborative divorce. If someone opens a door while you’re riding by on your bicycle, the question becomes, “who’s at fault.” And, in California, as a general rule, it is the fault of the driver who opens the door. But, it’s only a general rule. For instance, if the bicyclist sees the car pull over, sees the brake lights, and is riding very close to the car as they see the person getting out then a judge or a jury will probably say it’s the bicycle rider’s fault. On the other… [read post]

I know you just got back, but the IRS still wants to see that tax return. Taxpayers who were in military or naval service outside the United States or Puerto Rico (sorry, Fort Buchanan) on April 15 receive an automatic extension of two months to file 2012 returns (no extension filing required). However, the deadline for filing that return is now right around the corner. Since June 15 falls on a Saturday this year, eligible taxpayers will have until June 17 to file. Remember that the IRS will be… [read post]
