A man died earlier this week in the pharmacy of John Peter Smith hospital in Fort Worth.  Witnesses report that the man was discovered slumped over in a chair.  Help was called, but medical personnel did not arrive for at least ten minutes.  When help did arrive, a non-functional defibrillator was first used on the victim but apparently it was not charged up.  Emergency responders then tried to use a second defibrillator, which also did not work.  Medical workers then tried CPR and took the… [read post]

A celery Listeria outbreak that has killed at least four people in Texas is linked to contaminated celery processed at the Sangar Produce and Processing Co. plant in San Antonio. The initial celery Listeria connection was made by the Texas Department of State Health and refuted by the company. Two deaths were reported in two separate greater Cincinnati car accidents. A Clermont County man with 5 OVI drunk driving convictions drove off Kellog Avenue killing Tonya Chaney who was ejected from the vehicle. As usual the press reported on the allegation that they were not wearing seatbelts. I always wonder the effect on the families. A traumatic death, sudden and unexpected, violent, untimely, unnatural and preventable death causes a potentially more traumatizing loss that can increase the risk… [read post]

Five Texas celery Listeria deaths have been linked to contamination found at the Sangar Fresh Cut Produce plant in San Antonio as part of an investigation that dates to the very beginning of 2010. Listeria attorneys from PritzkerOlsen, P.A., have been monitoring this food poisoning outbreak since May, when Texas health officials first announced that two of seven people who contracted the same strain of listeriosis died. At that time, the cause wasn't known. But this week the Texas Department of… [read post]

Minnesota Salmonella Clusters investigated by the Minnesota Department of Health are solved as confirmed outbreaks more than 12 percent of the time -- a pattern that resulted in 43 confirmed outbreaks among 344 clusters studied from 2001-2007. The results, determined in a study published last week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, concludes that public health officials should not wait to investigate Salmonella clusters if a cluster of more than 4 reported cases has been received.… [read post]

A study done by the North Texas Health Care System has revealed that patients have had a bleak outlook whenever they have developed stage four pressure sores. The data suggests that preventing bedsores from developing into stage three or four sores may be more practical than treating the sores after they have developed. Nursing homes that neglect patients until they show the presence of advanced stage sores may be giving their patients a death sentence. While the actual pressure ulcers were not the… [read post]

Four listeriosis patients died in the 2012 Whole Foods Listeria cheese outbreak and a woman sickened in the outbreak lost her baby during pregnancy. This devastating outbreak was traced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to gourmet cheese sold at Whole Foods Markets in 14 states. The contamination came from Italian-made Frescolina Marte brand ricotta salata cheese. But in some instances, cross-contamination infected other cheeses, making those people sick, too. When we send our children off to school, we expect them to be taken care of, and we also expect them to be kept safe. From the school bus to the school house doors, it is expected that the school system, school administrators, and school personnel will act in such a manner that ensures the safety of our children. However, in the case of one Missouri young man, adequate care was not taken by school affiliated personnel to ensure his safety. Mason Adams, a then high school junior, was struck and… [read post]
