Today they're just little mini-prisons with shorter sentences where time is served day for day without the possibility of parole or supervision after release.If state jail felonies were eliminated as an offense category, some offenses might be lowered to Class A misdemeanors - most obviously penny ante drug possession offenses - and others would just be re-labeled third-degree felonies, with penalties of 2-10 years. To give but one example, the fact that Jeffrey Sherman has been repeatedly suspended from the California Bar, resigned from the Bar with charges pending, and not only pled guilty to conspiracy to commit bankruptcy fraud and tax evasion, but was sentenced to 32 months in prison as a result. I always supported the law for precisely this reason - increasingly municipalities, often at the behest of NIMBY-style neighborhood activists, simply aren't letting facilities that provide treatment or re-entry services to prisoners receive zoning in the locations where they're needed. [read post]
