In the spring of 2023, Michael Barzman, an auctioneer from California admitted to creating fake Basquiat paintings and pleaded guilty to making false statements about the paintings’ provenance in an FBI interview in August 2022.[4] In response to this scandal, the museum’s board fired its director, Aaron de Groft, and the American Alliance of Museums placed OMA on probation.
