  Perhaps because he sang with such unalloyed joy, he was often lumped into the same category as more saccharine pop singers of his generation when, in fact, he was one of the greatest interpreters of the Great American Songbook, far closer to Sinatra -- or perhaps Ella Fitzgerald -- when it came to pure skill and musicianship than to Perry Como and Andy Williams.
