Midwest grocery chain Hy-Vee announced it would take a similar approach, while other chains, including Safeway and Supervalu, said they would no longer sell LFTB products.Last week, Beef Products Inc. suspended operations at three of its four processing plants in response to loss of business from supermarkets and restaurant chains, effectively scaling back production by 70 percent. In late January, McDonald's announced that it would stop adding the product to its ground beef.One grocery chain, Iowa-based Hy-Vee, has already reversed its decision to discontinue selling LFTB-supplemented meat at its 233 locations, saying it will instead label its ground beef containing LFTB to allow customers a choice. In a recall related to one previously announced by Giant Eagle, the Pittsburgh-based grocer chain, the producer River Ranch Fresh Foods of Salinas, CA announced Friday that it is taking 2,154 cases of various bagged salads off the market because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.The bacteria was detected during a routine random test conducted by the Ohio Department of Agriculture.There have been no reported illnesses.The recall includes:-- Farmers Market, 8 oz Shredded… [read post]
