In many ways, the mechanism of finasteride is quite simple: it inhibits the production of testosterone, a male sex hormone, and so it decreases the problems of high testosterone or testosterone sensitivity (male pattern baldness, prostate enlargement) while creating the same problems as if a man had low testosterone (decreased muscle mass and sexual function, impotence).
