I warn students that they’re seductive, and that jobs there are easier to find (well, at least until recently, with the changes in the economics of law firms, that has been true for our graduates because of the extensive recruiting program with schools  – Sarah Waldeck has an interesting post on this issue http://www.concurringopinions.com/archives/2010/01/who-should-and-shouldnt-go-to-law-school.html), so finding another kind of job is much harder. The New York Times ran a much emailed piece talking about the declining value of a top-tier law degree, and now law professor Sarah Waldeck has followed up at Concurring Opinions with a blog post urging potential law students to be very tough-minded in deciding whether to go to law school: Forty-five thousand dollars per year (plus other costs) seems like a lot to pay for such uncertain prospects. Sarah Waldeck’s recent post  on the consequentialist rationale for publicizing breast-feeding’s benefits for mothers was right on the mark; breast-feeding can be challenging in the best of circumstances, so those who believe that “breast is best” should appeal to women’s self-interest rather than or as well as their noble sense of self-sacrifice. I met Peter Lattman and Sarah Waldeck at the close of the service, and the two of them struck up a conversation regarding the Oregon Supreme Court considering the legal issues of circumcision for a 12-year-old boy.Ambling through Fort Wadsworth, which protected New York for almost 200 years, it was hard not to think of soldiers and war as we waited, especially given Veterans Day.
