It's My Birthday and Wildlife Direct Needs
    Your Help
It's my birthday. It's not nearly the big deal it was last year when I
had a party at Barrel Oak Winery and 20+ friends showed up from near
and far, we drank a case of wine and raised more than $800 for
Wildlife Direct. The staff at WLD called my cell phone - from NAIROBI
    - and sang "Happy Birthday." That memory still makes me smile as do so
many others from that day. This year I'm returning to BOW, cake in
hand, to meet a couple of friends and drink a little wine for a bit.

    Dairy Farm Cruelty Revealed
Here's yesterday's DawnWatch Alert about Mercy For Animal's
outstanding undercover investigation of cruelty at a dairy farm. The
factory farm corporations are trying their best to prevent these
investigations into their heinous practices, so if you're still
consuming dairy products it's time for you to step up and watch. This
evening, Tuesday January 26, ABC News, both on World News Now and on
Nightline, is covering the horrendous abuse of cows that is standard

    A Little Sabbatical
In the early hours of Monday, November 9, I lost the only love of my
life, Mina, to cancer. She was just 13 years old. You can read about
our journey through cancer, chemotherapy, and our final days together
on her blog, It's OK To Talk About The Cancer. At some point, I'll
pick up this blog again, but for now I'm only writing in Mina's blog.

David Cassuto From the shameless self-promotion desk: I have a new

The Discourse of Food. You can get it here. It will appear in
DEMOCRACY, ECOLOGICAL INTEGRITY AND INTERNATIONAL LAW, a book
forthcoming this fall. Here's the abstract: Discussions of animal

Dear Colleagues: In response to my comments (1,2) about the Johnny

have suggested that if the Johnny Weir matter is a single-issue

I get a lot of inquiries from lawyers and law students about how they
can develop a niche practice in equine law. Below are the most common
FAQs and my responses. 1. Is there enough business in equine law to
make a living? The answer to this is a resounding "yes"! I honestly do
not believe the state in which you live will dictate this, either. I

How often have you heard the phrase, "the Government has unlimited

lobbyists commonly use this rhetoric to secure increased budgets for
indigent criminal defense. However, while this statement may be true
in a select few celebrated federal cases, nothing could be further

    Pardons and turkeys

    Pardons and turkeys
David Cassuto at the excellent new Animal Blawg has a short piece on
the rationale behind pardons and the November ritual of the President,
and apparently some governors, pardoning turkeys. He says, "This
ritual amounts to transferring the guilt of the perpetrators on to the
victims and then forgiving a token few of them in a bizarre act of
self-absolution by proxy." Well said. President Bush has granted very
few pardons and commutations of the real kind, i.e. ones issued to

This is no way to increase this blog's readership, but I wanted to

boring topic, but they are the starting point for a lot of animal law

Drawing the line on horse-drawn carriages in
    Portland
After a horse died on the street while pulling a wedding couple during
Portland's recent heat wave, local officials are wondering whether to
enact a carriage ban. It should be an easy question: a city with
modern streetcars, trams, and light rail should absolutely turn its

owner apparently left the young animal in the car before going inside
to see a movie. Cracking the window may not keep a dog from dying in a
closed car during a hot summer day. Even a short stop may be fatal.
Leave the Labrador at home before heading out on the road, unless
you're going to take him inside when Posted on Sunday, June 28, 2009 at 11:54 pm
