The Art of the Law School Transfer

The Art of the Law School Transfer
As many of you know, I transferred law schools after my 1L year. Many
law students consider transferring after their 1L year, generally to
move to a higher ranked school. I transferred because I was marrying
someone out of state (and dropping a little in the law school
rankings), so I didn't have the same academic pressure. Unfortunately,
that transfer process did not go smoothly for me. Thankfully, a LoaLS
listener has written a comprehensive guide on transferring,

A Plea to New Law Students

A Plea to New Law Students
Among other things, I am Firearms Instructor. When I tell people this,
it's usually a 50/50 split as to whether their eyes are filled with
fear or interest. Minds have been conditioned by the media and social
biases that "Guns are bad." When I counsel students at the college
where I work who are starting their education in legal studies, I ask
them a few questions (this works a bit better during an election

How many times have you contacted a government office to inquire about
some benefit or program and told you are not eligible? Have you then
left the office or hung up the phone accepting that what you have been
told is true? What if that is just flat out wrong? As an elder law

reminded of that fact when I was asked what I know about a particular

This clearly didnât sound like the Aid and Attendance program that in

    A Pension Crisis Brewing?

    A Pension Crisis Brewing?
Much has been written in recent years about the health of Social
Security. As the population ages two things are happening. Fewer
people are paying into the system, while at the same time more people
are receiving benefits, raising concern that the program will run out
of money. But there is another, perhaps, more serious crisis
developing within state employee pension programs that hasnât, until
now, received as much attention. We are seeing it here in New Jersey,
as are other states across the country. Posted on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 1:30 pm

    Online Gambling Regulation

    Online Gambling Regulation
Will Federal Banking Regulations Force Online Casinos to Fold? Until
recently, online casinos operated outside of the reach of the United
States Government. Now, in an innovative effort at law making,
Congress has charged banks and other financial institutions with
preventing the operation of online casinos in the US market. By
requiring banks to shun transactions from gambling sites, Congress
hopes to cut off the interaction between sites and their customers on

Democracy and Virtue: Optimism or Faith?
Jeffrey Stout's recent book, Democracy and Tradition, sounds an
optimistic note about the possibility of identifying and recovering an
American democratic tradition that is morally robust enough to provide
a foundation for a re-thinking of the common good, ?a raft of hope? in
a sea of popular despair about the prospects about a just, humane and
morally healthy pluralistic democracy. Posted on Tuesday, February 1, 2005 at 7:16 am
