The Quincecare duty (so called because it was first set out by Steyn J in Barclays Bank plc v Quincecare Ltd [1992] 4 All ER 363) provides that a bank will be liable to its customer in negligence if it makes a payment in circumstances where it had reasonable grounds for believing that the payment instruction was an attempt to misappropriate the funds of its customer.
