Where it went wrong was to adopt a metaphor of separation of church and state, a metaphor that Thomas Jefferson used in private correspondence, not with regard to the establishment clause but with regard to free exercise, where he was comforting Baptists who were being prosecuted and persecuted and physically assaulted because of their religious beliefs.
