TDCJ's cost per prisoner in recent years has been artificially low and cannot be sustained at current levels.I've said before, given TDCJ's understaffing crisis (they're around 3,000 guards short of minimum staffing), perhaps it's now time to consider actually reducing the size of Texas' Prison Nation in order to stave off rising incarceration costs.If you add up every Texan currently in prison, on probation, on parole, or sitting in a county jail, it… [read post]

There was an earlier report that six feet of water surged into the county courthouse next door, but this morning CNN reports "The storm flooded the historic district with 7 feet of water, which has since subsided to 4 feet, according to a Galveston county official. [read post]

In Harris County, judges have used their discretion to send those defendants to county jail for up to six months as a condition of their probation.According to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards (pdf), 1,102 state jail felons were sentenced to county jail terms as a probation condition as of May 1 - more than the number of new private beds for which the county just contracted.
