In other words, don’t go rushing to the Bradford Hill factors until and unless you have first shown an association; second, you have shown that it is “clear cut,” and not likely the result of bias or confounding; and third, you have ruled out the play of chance or random variability in explaining the difference between the observed and expected rates of disease.
