Noting that law enforcement officers may (1) search the arrestee’s person and the area within his immediate control upon arrest and (2) may search a vehicle incident to a recent occupant’s arrest if (a) the arrestee is within reaching distance of the passenger compartment at the time of the search or (b) it is reasonable to believe the vehicle contains evidence of the offense of arrest, the Court determined that neither justification applied.
