Just to make things a little more interesting, Chailly and his company bucked the modern trend of playing Schumann "as written" by the composer and instead made much of using the retouched orchestrations done by Gustav Mahler late in the 19th century out of his conviction that the original orchestrations got in the way of the composer's musical message by burying counterpoint and inner voices in an excessively thick texture.
