  The scuttlebutt is that orchestra players tend to prefer conductors who don't talk too much during rehearsals, and best respect those who efficiently communicate through their conducting technique with little verbal explanation - I certainly felt that as an orchestra member in high school and college - so perhaps they hadn't heard all of what Tortelier had to say to the audience, presuming he did not provide all this explanation in the rehearsals.
