When the "bailout" was completed, the thrift industry was drastically smaller (if that's what the blog's author is referring to as "community banks"), and the regional banks in the Southwest were, for the most part, gone (Cullen Frost being an exception in Texas). [read post]

The 2008 edition of that publication, which went on sale in late August, forecasts plenty of snow this winter across the Northeast, temperatures averaging as much as 3 degrees below normal along most of the Atlantic Coast, and four major frosts as far south as Florida, but with tamer weather in the West.I'm think I'll split the difference and bank on the Law of Averages.Thus, I'm counting on a pretty normal winter. But the law being violated here -- FISA -- was much more important than the one being violated at the Watergate Hotel, and in some sense the threat to the Constitution is much greater here, too, because, pace the David Frost incident, Nixon did not actually think or argue that the break-in (or most of the cover-up) was legal, whereas the Bush/Cheney/Addington theory of the Constitution would quite forthrightly allow the President to disregard statutes and treaties whenever he thinks they… [read post]
