The Grayson County DA is on the board, as is the executive director of the Permian Basin MHMR from Midland, a district judge from Cameron County and a doctor from Beaumont.For some unexplained reason, Perry only appointed six members to the board, including the chair, but the Sunset bill says it should have seven. The executive director of the Harris County MHMR Authority, Steven Schnee, has an effective op ed in the Houston Chronicle today declaring that the scope of mentally ill people in the Harris County jail foretells a coming crisis:The Harris County Jail is now the largest mental health facility in Texas. So they convinced the Lege to give money that otherwise would have gone to treat mentally ill people in jails for community based programming.Problem is, the Lege gave MHMR centers the money without mandating that they handle competency restoration cases. [read post]
