Without Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and Mike Piazza -- who is apparently now suspect based on nothing more than hearsay and weak anecdotal information (as is Jeff Bagwell, perhaps a more borderline candidate)-- the Hall of Fame's avowed goals of "preserving history and honoring excellence" will be greatly diminished. Clemens, 49, mounted a successful defense in what was billed as a huge loss for the Justice Department As the Washington Post notes, it's the second loss for the government in such a case -- Barry Bonds was convicted of obstruction of justice last year but a jury failed to reach a verdict on accusations that Bonds lied to a grand jury about whether he had taken performance-enhancing substances. As prosectors have experienced in their loss here, in the earlier loss against Barry Bond’s and with their inability to get a conviction against John Edwards–scoundrels may be scoundrels and cheats may be cheats, but juries demand real proof beyond a reasonable doubt from their government before they will convict a national figure.
