Reuters reported on Sept. 5, 2007 that the CAFC upheld the validity of a key patent on Forest Laboratories' blockbuster depression drug Lexapro and confirmed a lower court's decision to block sales of generic forms of the drug made by Ivax (Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd) and Cipla Ltd. The Brazilian government's decision to override the patent rights of Merck's HIV/AIDS drug Stocrin (efavirenz) and buy reverse engineered generic versions of the drug at low cost has come as a boon for Indian pharmaceutical companies manufacturing generic versions of efavirenz such as Cipla, Ranbaxy, Aurobindo Pharma and Strides Arcolab.
