Unsurprisingly, a fact NOT DISCLOSED in the report is that the total asset seizures announced by the Crown Office yesterday, actually amount to much less than even 10% of the total running cost of the Crown Office over the past ten years, put at a staggering ONE BILLION POUNDS over the last decade, a cost which also includes MASSIVE bonus payments totalling HALF A MILLION POUNDS in just two years, to Crown Office staff and prosecutors. By making this or any other crime a felony, not only is this an additional threat to criminal defendants' liberty and reputation, but also is financially draining on the accused (lawyers typically bill more for felony than misdemeanor defense), on the courts (felony cases in total require more court resources than misdemeanors), and government finances (through financing prosecutors, police, indigent defense / public defender offices, and courts). The Criscione case, which I wrote about here, has been dismissed on procedural grounds; Cleveland.com (Cory Shaffer) reports: Magistrate Chris Greene found that neither a police officer nor Brook Park city prosecutor Peter Sackett signed the complaints that originally charged 64-year-old Gina Criscione with misdemeanor telecommunications harassment and menacing by stalking, and the complaints were therefore defective.
