(then White House Chief of Staff) The short story is that the acting Attorney General, James Comey, would not sign off on the legality of the NSA's domestic spying program, so the White House sent Gonzales and Card to Ashcroft's hospital room to try to get Ashcroft to sign off on the reauthorization of the program.Ashcroft did not sign the papers and told Card and Gonzales that Comey was the AG.
