In his most important work On the Social Contract (1762), Rousseau took aim at aristocracy, monarchy and divine right, at Grotius and Aristotle, and theorised a radical republican form of government in which individual freedom could be realised through citizens’ complete alienation of the “natural” freedom of pre-civil society, for participation in, and subjection to, institutions and laws embodying the community’s “general will”.
