I'm sure there are many answers to why, but let's start with the Vox approach.Obviously, asking "why" contains a premise you might disagree with: O'Malley had to apologize.But at least it's a fact that O'Malley thought he had to apologize or, strike that, apologizing was easier/better/whatever than doing anything other than apologizing.
