The air-travel industry will be under increasing pressure to cut its emissions or pay a carbon tax, and while the best immediate opportunity may be to improve fuel efficiency, the best way to increase fuel efficiency is to update the current air-traffic control system using NextGen, the Federal Aviation Administration’s long-term plan to replace the current system with one using satellites and a global positioning system.
