I don’t mean to gainsay the impact the FTC has had on privacy and data-security issues, but many (myself included) seemed to think the commission was contemplating regulations that would extend well beyond the scope of its statutory remit, and that it was doing so with a conclusory attitude toward the harms to be addressed and a nearly wholesale dismissal of the vast consumer benefits produced by digital commerce.
