IL tax specialist Gary Hoff says for 2009 only, new equipment can be depreciated over 5 years, instead of 7, but if that is more depreciation than you need, you can elect the 10 year straight line depreciation option on all qualifying purchases. 50% bonus depreciation is also available for this year but it must be used on all property in a specific class, such as 5 year property like pickup trucks, or 7 year property such as farm machinery.
