According to the IOL News report, the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crimes Court sentenced the man to a three-year suspended sentence for contravening the Copyright Act, 98 of 1978 and fined him R3 000 or a six-month suspended sentence for contravening the Films and Publications Act 65 of 1996.The news report does not specify which sections of the legislation the man was charged under and what follows are this Leo's best guesses. This week Afro Leo let out a hearty roar at the news that the Afro-IP specialist African intellectual property weblog had posted its 800th news item. 800 searchable items (you can word-search the site, using the little box in the top left hand corner of the blog's front page) may not sound vast over two-and-a-bit years, particularly when you consider how many countries there are in Africa -- but it is a big step towards improved accessibility of current information… [read post]

The word "Tribunal" does not feature throughout the entire Trade Marks Act and is not related to the Copyright Tribunal.Afro Leo would have like to have seen more in the draft IP Policy on trade marks especially in making the system quicker, easier to use, easier to search and more available.
