D'Indy (1851-1931) was one of many young French composers of the late 19th century who fell under the heavy sway of Richard Wagner, and this proves fatal to "Fervaal," an opera of near-Wagnerian length and seriousness set to a ridiculous French libretto (by the composer) that seems to pick up bits and pieces from various Wagner opera plots.
