As an update to our prior post, rent-stabilized landlords are one step closer to securing the first significant rent increase in years.On May 5, 2022, the Rent Guidelines Board (RGB), in a preliminary 5 to 4 vote, approved a proposal by its Chairperson, David Reiss, to increase stabilized rents by 2% to 4% for one-year leases, and 4% to 6% for two-year leases. According to the statute, if the landlord fails to comply with #1 or #4 above, the tenant shall be awarded three times the amount of the security deposit, plus interest in the amount of five percent from the date when such payment came due, together with any court costs and attorney fees. My question: Say that you’re a landlord in Kansas, and you learn that a tenant of yours is accused of a violent crime (rape, assault and battery, and the like), of a sort that the tenant might conceivably commit against another tenant. [read post]
