12/05/2007FORT MYERS -- Sex offenders in Lee County will be charged a fee to register with the state -- which they are required to do by law.County commissioners approved the fee Tuesday.The sheriff's office said Lee County will be the first in Florida to require sex offenders and predators to pay a fee each time they register. " Certainly focusing on suspects who police believe committed hundreds of similar crimes makes a lot more sense than some of the more random enforcement tactics police engage in, e.g., conducting "fishing expeditions" at traffic stops.OTOH, this could be emblematic of a different problem - the periodic tendency for Dallas County to charge and convict innocent people. Pierce County Superior Court Judge Bryan Chushcoff accepted the pleas of Lee William Giles Jr. and Maureen Elizabeth Wear on Monday.Giles, 63, and Wear, 47, each pleaded guilty to one count each of first-degree child rape, second-degree child rape, first-degree child molestation and third-degree assault.Prosecutors and defense attorneys will recommend sentences of just more than 19 years in prison for both defendants.But the terms of confinement will be left open-ended.
