Although the North Carolina estate tax was repealed on January 1, 2010 due to repeal of the federal estate tax, the Tax Relief Act of 2010 reinstated the federal estate tax retroactively back to January 1, 2010, and so the North Carolina estate tax has also been reinstated retroactively back to January 1, 2010 with a $5,000,000 exemption.
