 Of course, with another outbreak in 2010, this time Salmonella in eggs sickening 1,800 and causing the recall of 500,000,000 eggs, the Subcommittee had even more villains and more victims (those, too, my clients).From these tragedies came H.B. 2749 and S. 510 (with the Tester/Hagen Amendment) which is now H.B. 3082 and heading this next week to the Senate for a vote.I hope to be there to see it happen. In between watching on CSPAN the House argue, albeit politely, over inserting S. 510, with Tester/Hagen Amendment into the 2011 spending bill, I had a chance to talk with Mark Steil and MPR for his story, “State ratchets up pressure on raw milk seller:” The state has made repeated efforts to stop Michael and Roger Hartmann from selling unpasteurized milk in the Twin Cities and other locations, but the brothers have continued to deliver their products.  To the chagrin of everyone who worked hard to get S. 510, the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (and the Tester/Hagen Amendment), passed out of the Senate Monday, the bill is now facing a significant uphill battle.The future of S. 510, which received broad bipartisan support (73 yeas 25 nays), is now in jeopardy due to a provision in the bill that would allow the FDA to impose fees on importers, and on companies whose food is recalled because of contamination.
