Oddly, she went out of her way to say her beef wasn't with Mike Ward, who was in the room and who she said was doing his job, but he's been the primary Statesman reporter assigned to the story for many months.Her two chief complaints, she said, were people questioning her leadership ability and comments made about the Coke County closure. In the Austin Statesman today Mike Ward answers why Texas Youth Commission conservator Ed Owens has appeared AWOL the last few weeks - he actually retired on Aug. 31 and now only occasionally comes to Austin or checks in by phone.Owens didn't tell the Legislature at the joint House-Senate hearing on August 29 that he would retire and become a volunteer two days later - it's inconceivable that he didn't know, so the only reason could be an intentional decision to keep… [read post]

After receiving criticisms for attempting to parole older youth who'd committed serious offenses, TYC today took a broadside from Mike Ward about the number of misdemeanor inmates still incarcerated:In mid-June, 503 youths were being held for misdemeanor crimes, including five who were supposed to have been released in 2005, according to internal commission reports.
